LEXUS OWNERS TREATED TO EXCLUSIVE MOVIE OF VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS

Kuala Lumpur, 24 July 2017 - In conjunction with the global premiere of the VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS, the visually spectacular new adventure film based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers.

Lexus Malaysia organised an exclusive viewing for over a thousand Lexus owners at 6 locations recently. The owners, in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang, Melaka, Johor Bahru and Kuching, were among the first in the world to see the movie prior to public screening.

Set in the 28th century, the action-packed movie is about a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defence, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. But there is a mystery at the centre of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and the team must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

Lexus established a creative partnership with film studio EuropaCorp and was involved in the creation of the amazing SKYJET, a single-seat pursuit craft featured in the film. The movie team created the SKYJET with the ambition of featuring a vehicle grounded in reality but set 700 years in the future.

“For this partnership, we were looking for a brand that's pioneering in innovation and technology, who is focused on the future more than the past,” said Luc Besson, the movie’s director.

The creative team met with Lexus Chief Engineer, Takeaki Kato and his design team to discuss incorporating believable, imaginative technologies and contemporary design cues into the final iteration of the SKYJET.

The SKYJET design also incorporates an adapted interpretation of the Lexus signature spindle grille, and a similar headlight design to that of the latest Lexus LC 500 coupe, defined by an athletic and aerodynamic shape.

The story also incorporates an imagined energy capsule of the future, inspired by work carried out by Lexus on innovative hydrogen fuel cell technology. “The starting point of our idea was the fact that conventional cars, whether they have a combustion engine or pure electric drive like the ones we have today, all require some kind of fueling or charging station. But can you imagine having to find a refuelling station that’s thousands of miles or even thousands of light years away each time you need to fill up your vehicle? How much simpler would transporting this fuel be if it were condensed in compact form?”

“One idea we discussed was a system to harness easily renewable, dense energy into a cartridge that can be recharged at home. And this would be placed inside the SKYJET to power its propulsion.

We thought this could be a real possibility in the 28th century. It eliminates the need to develop an entire infrastructure to transport and sell fuel, such as resorting to pipelines and fuelling stations in space,” explained Kato.

Lexus NX200t owner Daniel Ahmad, along with other guests of Lexus Malaysia, was delighted to attend the world premiere of the movie. All the guests were shown Lexus hospitality prior to the movie screening at the six cinema locations in Peninsular and East Malaysia. With delicacies from world renowned food artisan, Nathalie Gourmet, customers were treated to a truly memorable night.

“It was an incredible experience being transported into the future. I wish the Lexus Skyjet would be available in my lifetime! Such a cool spacecraft!” he said after the movie.

While the movie will strengthen the image that Lexus is not just any automobile brand and underline the advanced future technology of the brand, the exclusive screening for Lexus owners will also enhance the relationship between Lexus and its clientele.

Events such as this, where our Lexus owners will be among the first in the world to see the new movie, reflect the exclusivity that their ownership experience brings them,” said Ravindran Kurusamy, President of UMW Toyota Motor.
